In a significant virtual meeting on Tuesday night, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert engaged with the players’ union executive committee, focusing on the pressing issue of online harassment faced by athletes in the league. This dialogue was initiated at the request of the union, highlighting the urgency and importance of the matter.

Recently, several players have shared their distressing experiences with threats and harassment on social media platforms. Notably, Chelsea Gray of the Las Vegas Aces revealed a frightening message from a user that included a racial slur. Following swift action, this individual was identified and subsequently terminated from his position at Hilton Grand Vacations, demonstrating the potential consequences of online abuse.

In a joint statement released after the meeting, both the league and the players’ union emphasized the need for early intervention and proactive communication. They affirmed their commitment to enhancing security resources and exploring partnerships with organizations that align with the league’s values and priorities.

The WNBA has prioritized addressing player abuse over recent years, launching initiatives such as the “No Space for Hate” platform last season. This program incorporates advanced AI technology that allows players to filter out hateful comments, aiming to create a safer online environment.

When instances of harassment escalate, the league’s security office takes immediate action to investigate the situation. Additional discussions during the meeting also highlighted the need for accountability from technology companies and the importance of streamlined communication between the WNBA and law enforcement agencies.

WNBPA secretary Elizabeth Williams emphasized the significance of communication, noting the need for more consistent dialogue between the league and players. This, she stated, would foster a greater sense of comfort and security among the athletes.

In a recent incident, player Alyssa Thomas received death threats after an on-court altercation, which led to her suspension for a Flagrant-2 foul. Thomas expressed her disappointment regarding the lack of communication from the league concerning the threats she faced.

While some players, like Natasha Cloud, have previously criticized Engelbert for not doing enough, Cloud reassessed her stance, acknowledging the limitations of what the league can achieve. She remarked, “There’s only so much that the league can do because people are going to be miserable and they’re going to continue to be hateful human beings.” Cloud also highlighted the potential for lifetime bans for harassers within arenas and leagues.

As the WNBA continues to navigate this complex issue, the commitment to player safety and wellbeing remains paramount. The ongoing dialogue between the league and players is a crucial step towards fostering a supportive environment that prioritizes respect and accountability.
