Carrick under more pressure as 10-man Man United beaten at Chelsea, Man City loses again

Michael Carrick’s tenure as Manchester United manager faced increased scrutiny after a disappointing 2-0 defeat at Chelsea in the Premier League. The match at Stamford Bridge saw Lisandro Martinez receive a reckless red card, compounding the club’s ongoing struggles, leaving them in a precarious position in the league.

United’s woes were mirrored by their Manchester rivals, City, who suffered a surprising 1-0 home loss to Brighton, marking a rare back-to-back defeat after a stellar start to the season with seven consecutive wins.

Heading into the Chelsea match, Carrick was already under immense pressure, seemingly managing his job on a game-by-game basis. He made the decision to reinstate Bruno Fernandes to the starting XI after the captain was benched the previous week, a choice that didn’t yield the desired results.

Following the defeat, United has now endured a nine-match winless streak across all competitions—their longest since 1988, as reported by the BBC. The goals from Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer in the second half sealed United’s fate, further deepening the crisis at the club.

“Things have gone against us, and gone against us in a big way,” Carrick reflected post-match. “It unraveled quickly.”

The turning point of the match came in the 64th minute when Palmer converted a penalty. The penalty was awarded after Martinez, already on a yellow card, committed a foul by striking Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana in the face during a corner kick. This incident led to Martinez receiving a second yellow card, resulting in his dismissal. Carrick’s reaction to the sending-off was telling; he did not acknowledge Martinez as he exited the field.

“It has a major importance on the game,” Carrick stated of the red card. “A huge moment.”

Currently, United finds itself perilously close to the relegation zone, with only one league win to show from nine matches. They are just one point above the bottom three, raising alarm bells for a club traditionally viewed as one of England’s most prestigious.

This season, United has managed to secure only two victories out of 13 matches in all competitions, with both wins coming against lower-tier teams: Ipswich in the Premier League and Sabah in the Champions League.

Looking ahead, United’s next fixture is a home match against Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday, leaving uncertainty surrounding Carrick’s future as manager.

“I think the mentality was there right from the first minute,” commented United forward Bryan Mbeumo. “We still trust everyone. Maybe today we just missed some chances. We could have been up early in the game, but that’s a positive to take out of this game.”

City’s Streak Ends Amid Turbulence

Meanwhile, Manchester City striker Erling Haaland saw his impressive scoring streak come to an end as City fell to Brighton. Haaland had scored in his previous seven league games, closing in on Jamie Vardy’s record for consecutive matches scored in. However, Brighton’s Yasin Ayari delivered an 11th-minute winner, leaving City to contend with their second consecutive league defeat.

City, who lost to Aston Villa the previous weekend, now faces pressure to reclaim their winning form, particularly with Arsenal poised to challenge for the top spot in their upcoming match against Liverpool.

“We were aware that we weren’t going to win all the games,” said City manager Enzo Maresca, reflecting on the challenges his team is currently facing. “So this kind of moment has arrived … we need to move on and win games as soon as possible.”

Bournemouth’s Remarkable Run

In contrast, Bournemouth continues to impress, extending their winning streak to six matches without conceding a goal after a 2-0 victory over Leeds. Goals from Evanilson and Amine Adli propelled Bournemouth to seventh place, showcasing their strong form in the league.

At the other end of the table, Sunderland remains in last place after a loss to Coventry, while Nottingham Forest continues to struggle, losing to Brentford. Promoted teams Hull and Ipswich managed to secure a draw in their encounter.

Later matches included Tottenham hosting Crystal Palace and Fulham visiting Aston Villa, further adding to the weekend’s football drama.
