SAN FRANCISCO – In a thrilling NBA Cup game on Friday night, the Golden State Warriors showcased their resilience, overcoming a staggering 25-point deficit to secure a commanding 112-95 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. Stephen Curry led the charge with an impressive performance, scoring 31 points, alongside six assists and four rebounds.
Despite Luka Doncic’s admirable effort with 37 points, seven rebounds, and five assists, the Lakers were unable to replicate their previous success against the Warriors, having won their season opener just a week prior in Los Angeles.
This win marked a historic moment for the Warriors, as they recorded the largest margin of victory in the shot clock era for a team that trailed by 20 or more points at the end of the first quarter. The previous record dated back to March 4, 1976, when the Warriors overcame a 23-point deficit to defeat the Chicago Bulls.
Curry’s performance was not only pivotal for the game but also significant for his career; in the fourth quarter, he surpassed Dominique Wilkins to claim 18th place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list.
Supporting Curry, Brandin Podziemski contributed 21 points, six assists, and five rebounds, while De’Anthony Melton added 16 points off the bench. Georges Niang also provided valuable support with 11 points, highlighting the depth of the Warriors’ roster.
The game began with a strong showing from Doncic, who scored 21 points in the first quarter alone, leading the Lakers to a dominant 38-15 lead. However, the Warriors responded fiercely, matching the Lakers’ first-quarter score with a 38-15 second quarter, making history as the first team in the shot clock era to trail by 23 or more points at the end of the first quarter and be tied or better at halftime.
As the game progressed, tensions escalated, especially between Curry and Doncic. Curry hit a three-pointer over Doncic in the third quarter, only for Doncic to answer back with a three of his own. The atmosphere intensified when Doncic received a technical foul late in the third quarter, amid chants from the crowd.
The Lakers capitalized on Golden State’s struggles, scoring 25 points off 17 turnovers, with 10 of those occurring in the first quarter. This statistic highlights the importance of ball security, a crucial aspect for the Warriors as they look to build on this victory.
Looking ahead, the Lakers will host the Toronto Raptors on Sunday night, while the Warriors will face the Los Angeles Clippers in their next game, both teams eager to maintain their momentum.
