SAN ANTONIO – Recently, social media has been buzzing with videos showing some wild celebrations in San Antonio. Fans were seen hanging out of moving cars, shooting fireworks from pickup trucks, and even lighting fires on the streets. While it’s great to see people excited about their team, the San Antonio Police Department is reminding everyone to celebrate safely and legally.
Emily Garvin, a public information officer with the SAPD, emphasized that these actions can lead to legal issues. “The legality of the fireworks, it is a city ordinance violation,” she stated. “So, we shouldn’t be popping any fireworks inside the city limits.”
Fans gathered outside on Southwest Military Drive to celebrate the Spurs winning their first series on Tuesday night. The excitement lasted for hours, with honking horns and cheers echoing through the night. “Last night was insane,” said fan Gary Ortega. “People were honking ‘til two in the morning.”
Cynthia Guy, another fan, expressed her joy in seeing so many happy faces in San Antonio. However, both she and Ortega shared concerns about the fireworks and reckless behavior. “The fireworks, I have a 4-year-old that’s out here with me sometimes,” Ortega mentioned. “It was scaring the crap out of her. They’re big booms.”
Another local, Luna, reflected on the unique energy and loyalty of San Antonio fans. “That’s what happens when you’re born in San Antonio,” she said. “It’s a different type of energy here. It’s a different type of loyalty.”
Garvin reiterated the importance of safety during celebrations. “If they want to celebrate, (if) they want to go honking, just be safe, follow traffic laws, follow city ordinances,” she advised. The police department aims to ensure everyone enjoys the celebrations while making it home safely.
