AUSTIN, Texas – In a significant political shift for the Lone Star State, Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa has announced the first members of her transition team during her inaugural press conference since her victory over incumbent Governor Greg Abbott. Hinojosa’s win marks a historic moment, as she becomes the first Democrat to assume the governorship of Texas since Ann Richards, who left office in 1995.

Hinojosa, who secured 53% of the vote, emphasized her commitment to inclusivity and bipartisanship as she prepares to take office. “This is a transition for the whole state of Texas, and as such we will have many opportunities for people to weigh in with their ideas, send in resumes, making sure also that there will be waves of announcements,” she stated, highlighting her intention to engage with a diverse array of voices from across the political spectrum.

Among the initial appointments to her transition team are Joe Madden, who will serve as the executive director, and Ryan Pollock, a union electrician and head of the Texas Building Trades Council. Additionally, former legislative colleague Ernest Bailes and Tamala Barksdale, who previously served with Hinojosa on the Austin Independent School District board, have also been named to key positions.

When questioned about her choice to form a bipartisan team following a decisive electoral victory, Hinojosa reiterated her campaign promises and vision for governance. “I’m not going to be the governor for just Democrats; I’m going to be the Governor for all the people of Texas,” she affirmed, stressing her aim to represent the interests of all Texans, regardless of their political affiliation.

Hinojosa reported that she has had one conversation with Abbott since the election, and their teams have been in communication to ensure a seamless transition. “Greg Abbott has been gracious and made sure to make me understand that they are going to fully cooperate with this position and be helpful as they can,” she noted. Their collaborative spirit aims to reassure the citizens of Texas that governance will continue smoothly during this transitional phase.

In addition to her transition efforts, Hinojosa is actively interviewing candidates to take over the role of state education commissioner, a critical position that will influence educational policies across Texas. She expressed hope that lawmakers from both parties will join her in pursuing the changes that Texans have called for. “I would say the people of Texas have spoken,” Hinojosa remarked. “I think it’s important that as elected leaders we respect what the people of Texas have said they want change.”
