Bill Belichick has once again been nominated as one of the five coaching candidates for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. This prestigious recognition places him alongside notable coaches such as Tom Coughlin, Mike Holmgren, Dan Reeves, and Mike Shanahan for potential induction into the Hall’s Class of 2027.

The list of nominees was revealed on Thursday by the Pro Football Hall of Fame, situated in Canton, Ohio. The Hall’s coaching subcommittee selected these candidates from a broader field of 14 nominees, with the intention of selecting one candidate to be considered by the Hall’s selection committee in early 2027.

Belichick, a six-time Super Bowl champion, faced a notable snub last year, when he was not elected in his first year of eligibility despite advancing in the nomination process. His exclusion from the Hall of Fame sparked considerable debate and criticism throughout the NFL community. Tom Brady, Belichick’s longtime quarterback, expressed his disbelief, stating, “If he’s not a first-ballot Hall of Famer, there’s really no coach that should ever be a first-ballot Hall of Famer, which is completely ridiculous because people deserve it. He’s incredible.”

Belichick’s impressive career includes six Super Bowl victories with the New England Patriots, along with two additional championships as a defensive assistant coach with the New York Giants. However, his tenure has not been without controversy; he was involved in a notable sign-stealing scandal known as “Spygate” during the 2007 season, which resulted in a $500,000 fine after the Patriots were caught filming defensive signals from the New York Jets.

After concluding his time with the Patriots in 2023, Belichick transitioned to coaching in college at North Carolina.

Coughlin, another nominee, won two Super Bowls with the Giants, famously defeating Belichick and Brady on both occasions. His coaching career spanned 20 seasons with a record of 182-157, including his time with both the Giants and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Holmgren, who coached the Green Bay Packers to a Super Bowl victory, boasts a record of 174-122 over 17 seasons with the Packers and Seattle Seahawks, also having won two Super Bowls as an assistant coach with the San Francisco 49ers.

Reeves, with a coaching record of 201-174-2 over 23 seasons, led the Denver Broncos to the Super Bowl three times and the Atlanta Falcons once, though he did not secure a victory in any of those appearances. Lastly, Shanahan achieved back-to-back Super Bowl titles with the Broncos and holds a record of 178-144 across 20 seasons with the Broncos and Washington Redskins, also winning a title with the 49ers as an assistant coach.

In addition to the coaching nominees, the Hall of Fame recently announced five contributors who have advanced in the process: Ralph Hay, Robert Kraft, Virginia McCaskey, Doug Williams, and John Wooten. The final list of 15 candidates will comprise one contributor, one coach, and 13 modern-era players. This group will be narrowed down to 10 and then to seven candidates as part of the selection process.

A selection committee made up of 25 members will vote on the nominees, requiring 80% support for induction. The Hall of Fame indicated that typically, between three to seven inductees are chosen each year, with five or six being the most likely outcome.

The Class of 2027 will be unveiled during the “NFL Honors” event in Los Angeles in February, with the official enshrinement ceremony scheduled for the following August in Canton.
