AUSTIN, Texas – In a stunning political upset, James Talarico has secured a victory in the Texas Senate race, marking a significant shift in the state’s political landscape. Talarico, a Democrat, addressed a victory rally on Tuesday night, framing his win as not just a personal triumph but a broader rebuke of entrenched political interests and big money in politics.

The Associated Press confirmed Talarico’s win over Republican incumbent Ken Paxton at approximately 10:05 p.m. Central Time. With this victory, Talarico becomes the first Democrat to represent Texas in the U.S. Senate since 1993, a milestone that signals changing tides in a state long dominated by Republican leadership.

“We just took back Texas,” Talarico proclaimed to a crowd of enthusiastic supporters. He emphasized that “all the money in the world” could not compete with the will of the Texas people. Drawing inspiration from the biblical tale of David and Goliath, he recounted how his campaign took on formidable opponents, including the wealthiest individuals and the political establishment in Washington. Talarico credited the resilience of Texans as his campaign’s “slingshot.”

Talarico, who previously taught language arts at Rhodes Middle School in San Antonio, highlighted the importance of supporting the underdog. He shared a personal narrative about his upbringing, recalling how his mother, a preacher’s daughter from Laredo, overcame adversity to raise him in a modest apartment in East Austin. This background, he suggested, shaped his understanding of the struggles faced by many Texans today.

His campaign faced unprecedented challenges, including an estimated $300 million in spending against him, which he described as the highest ever recorded in a Senate race in U.S. history. Talarico pointed to an onslaught of negative advertisements, smear campaigns, and even the impact of foreign bots and AI-generated misinformation as hurdles he had to overcome.

In his address, Talarico framed the current political divide not as one between left and right, but rather as a struggle between the top and bottom. He criticized billionaires who wield influence over media and politics, claiming they foster division among ordinary Americans to distract from critical issues such as education and healthcare cuts, as well as tax policies that favor the wealthy.

Rooted in his Christian faith, Talarico proposed what he called “a politics of love” as a way forward. His campaign mobilized an impressive 60,000 volunteers, who engaged in community service initiatives, including delivering bottled water to Sand Branch, a community lacking access to clean water, and donating school supplies and food to those in need across Texas.

Talarico emphasized his commitment to serving all Texans, regardless of their political affiliation. “This win is not about the Democratic Party or the Republican Party,” he asserted, aiming to unify constituents across the political spectrum. He concluded his speech by invoking the Gospel story of Jesus overturning the tables of the money changers, suggesting that it’s time for a transformative approach in the Senate. “As we head to the United States Senate,” he urged, “Texas, it’s time to start flipping tables.”
