SEATTLE – In a thrilling encounter at the World Cup, Romelu Lukaku made a significant impact shortly after stepping onto the pitch. His presence as a second-half substitute not only energized the Belgium team but also led to their equalizing goal, resulting in a 1-1 draw against Egypt on Monday.

Lukaku entered the match in the 66th minute, with Belgium trailing 1-0. Displaying his trademark speed and positioning, he charged down the center of the field, attempting to redirect a cross from the right. However, in a twist of fate, it was Egypt’s defender, Mohamed Hany, who inadvertently scored an own goal while trying to thwart Lukaku’s efforts.

Remarkably, the equalizing goal came just 23 seconds after Lukaku’s introduction, showcasing the immediate effect he had on the game. Prior to this, Egypt had taken the lead in the 19th minute, with Emam Ashour netting his first international goal, capitalizing on a defensive lapse from Belgium. This goal marked a historic moment, as it was only Egypt’s second lead in World Cup history during their fourth tournament appearance.

Despite this positive result, Belgium’s recent World Cup journey has been challenging. After failing to progress beyond the group stage in the 2022 World Cup held in Qatar, the team has struggled to find its form, going winless in their last three matches in the tournament.

Egypt, on the other hand, had several opportunities to extend their lead but could not capitalize, allowing Belgium to remain competitive. Both Lukaku and fellow teammate Kevin De Bruyne had numerous chances to secure a lead for their team, but the match ended in a draw, leaving fans anticipating the next round of fixtures.

As the tournament progresses, the performances of players like Lukaku will be crucial for Belgium as they seek to redeem themselves on the world stage.
