NEW YORK – A tragic incident unfolded during the New York City Marathon, where a young woman from Pennsylvania, Rachel Apa, lost her life after collapsing approximately two miles from the finish line. This was Apa’s first marathon, and she was participating to raise funds for charity.

At just 24 years old, Apa, hailing from Lewisberry, Pennsylvania, was nearing the 24-mile mark of the grueling 26.2-mile race on Sunday when she collapsed. The New York Police Department reported that her father, Steve Apa, later revealed she had succumbed to rhabdomyolysis, a rare and serious condition that can occur during intense physical exertion, leading to muscle breakdown and potential poisoning of the body.

The New York Road Runners, the organization responsible for the marathon, confirmed that bystanders and medical staff administered CPR on the scene. A defibrillator was also utilized before paramedics transported her to Mount Sinai Medical Center. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Apa remained in critical condition and unfortunately passed away after several hours of treatment.

Apa’s motivation for running the marathon stemmed from her desire to honor her grandfather, who had battled Parkinson’s disease before passing away in 2022. She was a former Division I field hockey player at Bucknell University, demonstrating her commitment to athletics and an active lifestyle, which her father emphasized by stating she was in “perfect health” prior to the race.

Witnesses described the scene as heart-wrenching, with one spectator, Michaela Nicholas, recounting how she encouraged Apa as she ran past and then witnessed her collapse shortly thereafter. Nicholas, who is a hospital social worker, rushed to Apa’s side to provide comfort, holding her hand and reassuring her that she was not alone.

This year’s marathon marked a significant milestone, celebrating 50 years of the event’s five-borough format. It drew a record 61,000 runners, showcasing the event’s growth and popularity. In the aftermath of Apa’s death, the New York Road Runners expressed deep condolences, stating, “We are deeply saddened by Rachel’s passing following running in Sunday’s race. Our thoughts and sincere sympathies are with her family, friends, and the entire running community.”

Following the news of her passing, donations began to flow into Apa’s “Parkinson’s Champions” fundraising page, rapidly surpassing her original goal of $4,000. The fundraiser, sponsored by the Parkinson’s Foundation, highlighted her commitment to raising awareness and funds for a cause close to her heart.

Apa’s legacy lives on through her contributions to the sport of field hockey, where she excelled at Bucknell University, graduating in 2024 with a degree in markets, innovation, and design. The university expressed their condolences, recognizing the impact she made both on the field and within her community.

In a heartfelt tribute, USA Field Hockey, the sport’s governing body, conveyed their sorrow over Apa’s untimely passing, stating, “Rachel’s impact on the sport and those around her will not be forgotten. Our thoughts are with everyone mourning this tragic loss.”

The running community and beyond continue to mourn the loss of Rachel Apa, a vibrant young woman whose life was dedicated to honoring her grandfather and advocating for a cause that touched her heart.
