SEATTLE – In a pivotal matchup, Yordan Alvarez propelled the Houston Astros back into the race for the American League West title with a commanding performance against the Seattle Mariners, leading his team to a 7-0 victory on Tuesday night. This win not only snapped a three-game losing streak for the Astros but also allowed them to pull even with the Texas Rangers at the top of the division, each team now sitting at 78 wins and 79 losses.

As the postseason looms, both Houston and Texas have just five games left on their schedules. The Astros currently hold the head-to-head tiebreaker, which could prove crucial as they vie for playoff positioning. Meanwhile, the Mariners, last year’s AL West champions, find themselves on the brink of playoff elimination with a record of 73-84.

Alvarez showcased his exceptional talent by hitting a two-run homer in the eighth inning, tying him with Junior Caminero of the Tampa Bay Rays for the league lead with 41 home runs. His batting average of .314 currently places him at the top of the American League leaderboard, and with 102 RBIs, he trails only Baltimore Orioles slugger Pete Alonso, who has 108.

The last player to achieve the prestigious Triple Crown—leading the league in batting average, home runs, and RBIs—was Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers in 2012. Alvarez is in a prime position to replicate this feat, showcasing both his power and consistency at the plate.

In addition to Alvarez’s contributions, Christian Walker added to the Astros’ scoring barrage with a three-run homer in the third inning, marking the 200th home run of his career and his 26th of the 2023 season. Isaac Paredes also made his mark with a solo shot in the sixth, further solidifying Houston’s dominance in this game.

On the pitching side, Houston starter Cristian Javier exited early due to right groin tightness after throwing 45 pitches over two innings. Miguel Ullola came in as a relief pitcher, delivering two innings of one-hit ball to secure his first major league victory. The Astros’ bullpen continued to excel, with Bennett Sousa, AJ Blubaugh, and Logan VanWey combining to complete a four-hit shutout against the Mariners.

For Seattle, starter Logan Gilbert struggled, lasting only four innings and allowing four runs on ten hits, the most hits he has given up in a game this season. The Mariners’ hopes for a return to the playoffs now hinge on the remaining games, as they seek to avoid a disappointing end to a season that began with high expectations.

Looking ahead, the Astros will send rookie right-hander Ethan Pecko to the mound for his fifth major league start on Wednesday, while the Mariners will counter with right-hander George Kirby. With the stakes higher than ever, fans can expect an exciting finish to the regular season.
