PHOENIX – The Justice Department is taking steps to address perceived inefficiencies within the immigration court system, as acting Attorney General Todd Blanche announced the intention to replace judges who are seen as either ruling too slowly or failing to adhere strictly to the law. This initiative is part of the broader immigration enforcement strategy under the Trump administration, which aims to significantly reduce a staggering backlog of 3.7 million cases, thereby facilitating a more aggressive mass deportation policy.
Blanche made these remarks during his address at the Border Security Expo in Phoenix, a prominent event that brings together key figures in immigration enforcement, law enforcement officials, and representatives from federal contractors. His appearance underscores the heightened focus on border security and immigration enforcement that has characterized the current administration.
Since assuming leadership of the Justice Department, Blanche has offered some of the most comprehensive insights into the changes being implemented in immigration courts. He emphasized the importance of judges adhering to their legal obligations, stating, “You take an oath and you’re not allowed to make decisions based upon what appear to be just sympathy or your whim.”
He further clarified that judges who are not applying the law appropriately and are causing unacceptable delays would be replaced with new appointees. This shift reflects the administration’s commitment to expedite the processing of immigration cases, aligning with its broader agenda of mass deportations.
While the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) plays a central role in executing the mass deportation initiative, immigration courts, which are managed by the Justice Department, are crucial to the overall immigration system. Flush with funding from Congress, the Justice Department has been rapidly hiring new immigration judges. However, some critics question whether these judges meet the necessary standards for their roles.
