LONDON – Russell Brand, a well-known British actor and comedian, has been found guilty of serious charges, including rape and sexual assault, stemming from incidents that occurred more than two decades ago.
On Thursday, Judge Joel Bennathan announced that Brand would face a prison sentence, with the specific time to be determined in court on Monday. Following the verdict, Brand was taken into custody.
The prosecution described Brand as a “ruthless, calculating, manipulative sexual predator,” emphasizing the severity of the allegations brought against him.
Despite his conviction, Brand, who is 51 years old, has denied all allegations. He admitted to having lived a promiscuous lifestyle in his youth but insisted that he never forced anyone into sexual acts.
The jury, consisting of eight men and four women, deliberated for over eight hours before reaching a verdict. Brand was found guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault involving four women. However, he was acquitted of two additional rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault.
Brand gained fame in the early 2000s through his edgy stand-up comedy and various television programs, including his own BBC radio show. He also starred in popular Hollywood films like “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “Get Him to the Greek,” and had a brief marriage to pop star Katy Perry.
In recent years, Brand has distanced himself from mainstream media, moving to Florida and building a significant online presence where he shares content on wellness, conspiracy theories, and his religious beliefs.
Brand expressed that the ongoing legal battle has had a profound impact on his life and family. He stated, “My entire life has been consumed by these events, these allegations, these accusations.”
His legal team argued that the women who came forward to report the alleged assaults were less credible because they waited many years to speak to the police, particularly after a 2023 documentary aired that included anonymous claims against him.
During the trial, Brand revealed that many of his friends and colleagues had distanced themselves from him due to the allegations. His wife, Laura, was present in court and testified in his defense, but Brand noted that no one with relevant evidence agreed to testify on his behalf.
