MIAMI – A tragic incident unfolded in Florida, where a 28-year-old Mexican man named Juan Jairo Coronilla Durán lost his life after being struck by a tractor trailer while fleeing from federal immigration officers. This heartbreaking event has raised numerous questions about the circumstances leading up to his untimely death.
On July 14, Coronilla Durán was reportedly vacationing in the U.S. with a valid tourist visa, according to officials from Mexico and organizations aiding his family. He had traveled from his home in San Luis de la Paz, Guanajuato, Mexico, to visit relatives in Atlanta before heading to Florida to enjoy the beaches.
During an encounter with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, Coronilla Durán and three others fled a vehicle parked at a gas station. While running, he suddenly darted across a busy road, tragically colliding with a semi-truck. His death marked a disturbing pattern of incidents involving immigration enforcement, as it followed two other fatalities linked to ICE encounters in Texas and Maine.
Although U.S. authorities have not publicly confirmed his identity, Isaret Jeffers, the founder of Colectivo Arbol—a group that advocates for farmworkers—shared that Coronilla Durán’s wife, Yezzika Alamilla, reached out for assistance following the incident. She expressed confusion about her husband’s situation, emphasizing that he was a tourist, not here to work.
Alamilla, distressed by her husband’s tragic fate, believes his fear of immigration authorities prompted his desperate attempt to escape. Advocacy groups have stepped in to help her navigate this challenging time, including covering her travel expenses to reclaim her husband’s remains.
The Mexican government has confirmed that they are assisting Alamilla, ensuring she can see her husband’s body before it is repatriated to Mexico. Coronilla Durán will be flown back to his hometown, where he will be laid to rest. He leaves behind two young children, a 7-month-old girl and a 7-year-old boy, who will grow up without their father.
