WASHINGTON – In a significant move ahead of the critical 2026 midterm elections, former President Donald Trump is scheduled to rally in Michigan next week. This event coincides with the beginning of early in-person voting for the state’s primary, during which voters will select nominees for open Senate and gubernatorial races.

The rally is planned for Oakland County on Monday, as reported by a source familiar with the plans who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the event.

Early in-person voting will begin on Saturday, leading up to the August 4 primary. During this primary, voters will also choose nominees for the U.S. House and various statewide offices. Notably, Republican Mike Rogers is running unopposed in the Senate primary. In contrast, the GOP gubernatorial contest is heating up between Trump-backed U.S. Rep. John James and businessman Perry Johnson.

The rally presents an opportunity for Trump to amplify his messaging as Republicans express concerns over rising gas prices and an unpopular war in Iran, which may impact their chances in the midterm elections. Currently, the GOP is defending slim majorities in both the House and Senate.

Having won Michigan in both 2016 and 2020, both major political parties recognize the importance of this battleground state for the upcoming elections.

The White House has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding Trump’s planned visit.

On the Democratic side, the most competitive primary race appears to be for the Senate nomination, where U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens and progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed are vying for the chance to challenge Rogers. The winner of this contest will face Rogers, who narrowly lost to now-Sen. Elissa Slotkin in the previous election cycle.

Meanwhile, the Republican gubernatorial race has been contentious, especially with Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer being term-limited. James has secured Trump’s endorsement, but Johnson has invested heavily in advertising that critiques James.

Adding to the excitement, Johnson’s campaign has already promoted a “Trump Tailgate” event scheduled for Monday.

Oakland County, the site of Trump’s rally, has historically been viewed as a key political bellwether in Michigan. Although Trump carried the state in the last two presidential elections, Democrats have steadily increased their voter margins in this area.

Republicans are optimistic about their prospects in 2026, hoping to regain power in a state that has largely been dominated by Democrats over the past decade, aside from Trump’s victories. However, challenges such as skyrocketing gas prices, an unpopular war in Iran, and tariffs adversely affecting the automotive industry have raised concerns about the political landscape for Republicans in Michigan.

Recent electoral trends highlight these challenges; for instance, a Democrat won a special election in May by nearly 20 points in a state Senate district that Kamala Harris narrowly won in 2020. The previous Democratic officeholder had secured the seat by a 6-point margin in the 2022 election.
