SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) board of trustees made a significant decision on Monday night, voting to appoint Toni Thompson as the district’s interim superintendent. This announcement comes as a pivotal moment for the district, which is looking to ensure a smooth transition in leadership.
Thompson, who is currently serving as the chief of staff for SAISD, will officially step into her new role on July 1. Her appointment is seen as a natural progression, given her extensive experience within the district.
The board president, Alicia Sebastian, expressed enthusiasm regarding Thompson’s appointment, stating, “We are truly excited to have Toni serve in this capacity.” Sebastian highlighted Thompson’s long-standing commitment to the district, remarking, “She has been a tremendous asset to this district for a number of years. What a better way to honor one of our own.”
Prior to her role as chief of staff, Thompson dedicated 22 years to serving as the associate superintendent for human resources. Her career in the field of education and human resources spans back to 1985, showcasing her depth of experience and knowledge in managing educational institutions.
Thompson’s promotion comes on the heels of current Superintendent Jaime Aquino’s retirement announcement, as he is set to leave the role in January 2027. This transition period will be crucial for SAISD as they navigate future challenges and opportunities.
