SAN ANTONIO – Are you planning to fly out of San Antonio International Airport this Labor Day weekend? If so, make sure to pack some snacks! You might be surprised by the prices inside the airport.
The Price of Convenience
One traveler expressed frustration, saying, “$3.50 for a Pepsi is outrageous.” While the airport has many shops for last-minute snacks and souvenirs, travelers often find that convenience comes with a hefty price tag.
“Being able to offer the right amenities to our passengers is really important,” said Sam Rodriguez, the airport’s aviation deputy director.
Rodriguez explained that vendors must adhere to a pricing policy, which means prices should be within 10% of what you would find on the street. However, many travelers wonder if this is actually the case.
KSAT Investigates Tests the Pricing Policy
A recent investigation by KSAT reporter Daniela Ibarra looked into whether the airport’s prices were indeed within the 10% margin. Rodriguez mentioned that comparing airport prices to large retailers like H-E-B and Walmart isn’t fair since airport stores operate under different models.
For example, at the airport, a 20-ounce bottle of LifeWater costs $4.59, while the same bottle costs $2.49 at a nearby QT store—an 84% markup!
Additionally, a bottle of 24 caplets of Aleve was found to be 27% more expensive at the airport than at QT.
Rodriguez stated, “San Antonio International Airport maintains its 10% above-street-pricing contract requirement through regular audits and reviews of menus and pricing submitted by our vendors.”
What Can Travelers Do?
If you’re feeling frustrated by the airport prices, Rodriguez has some advice: travelers can bring their own snacks! There’s nothing stopping you from packing your favorite chips or other essentials as long as you follow TSA regulations.
For those who do choose to buy snacks at the airport, remember that vendors are monitored to ensure compliance with pricing rules. If you notice any discrepancies, you can report them to airport authorities.
