Diego Hernandez was supposed to get married on November 20 at Posey Meadows, a beautiful wedding venue nestled in the countryside outside San Marcos. Sadly, he never made it to his wedding day.

Hernandez passed away suddenly in late April at just 25 years old, leaving behind a grieving family and fiancée who were heartbroken over a future that would never materialize.

In the wake of this tragedy, Lucy Hernandez, Diego’s mother, is speaking out about a dispute that has now escalated into a district court case.

“I’ve planned other funerals. I’ve lost my mom and my dad and a brother, but planning a son’s funeral is very different,” Lucy shared. “It weighs very different.”

Nearly $16,000 Paid Toward Wedding Venue

After notifying the venue’s owner in April that the wedding could not proceed, the family sought a refund of nearly $16,000 that had already been paid for the event.

Diego’s fiancée expressed her surprise, stating, “I honestly felt that it wasn’t going to go past a phone call.”

The venue’s owner, Julie Campbell, suggested options such as transferring the booking to a future date or using the balance for another event. However, Lucy Hernandez reported that a conversation in early May turned tense, and Campbell ultimately stated that the money would not be refunded.

“Where are their morals? Where are their moral principles?” Lucy asked, expressing her frustration. “We don’t have a fight in us. We’re emotionally drained. This is just weighing heavily.”

Julie Campbell did not respond to inquiries seeking comments on the situation.

Lawsuit Calls Venue’s Decision an ‘Unjust and Ghoulish Windfall’

In late June, an attorney representing Diego Hernandez’s fiancée sent Posey Meadows a demand letter, asking for the return of the funds. When the issue remained unresolved, the fiancée filed a lawsuit in Hays County district court in late July.

The lawsuit describes Posey Meadows’ choice to keep the money as an “unjust and ghoulish windfall built on a young man’s death.”
