BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – A Bexar County woman was sentenced to more than a decade in prison following her intoxication manslaughter arrest two years ago.

Judge Christine Del Prado, who presides over Bexar County’s 227th Criminal District Court, sentenced Giovanna Blangiardo to 12 years in prison on Monday. Blangiardo had previously accepted a plea deal related to her charges.

In addition to the manslaughter charge, Blangiardo, who is 38, faced other charges, including aggravated assault. However, court records indicate that these additional charges were ultimately dismissed.

Incident Details

The incident occurred on February 8, 2024, when Bexar County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a serious three-vehicle collision around 4:30 a.m. The crash took place on Potranco Road, near State Highway 211 and Arcadia Path in the far west part of Bexar County.

According to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), Blangiardo was driving a Chevrolet SUV when she suddenly veered into oncoming traffic. Her vehicle collided with a Toyota SUV driven by Whitney Brooke Weddel. A third vehicle, a Nissan SUV, attempted to avoid the collision but ended up caught between the two vehicles.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and found Blangiardo and Weddel trapped in their vehicles. Both were taken to a local hospital, but sadly, Weddel was pronounced dead upon arrival. Blangiardo survived, while the driver of the Nissan SUV did not sustain any injuries.

Following the crash, BCSO obtained a blood warrant for Blangiardo while she was hospitalized, leading to her arrest by proxy.
