SAN ANTONIO – A young man from Hondo, Texas, named Jay Anthony Villarreal, has been found guilty by a federal jury for threatening to overthrow the United States government in 2025. This serious case was highlighted in a recent news release from U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Texas, Justin R. Simmons.
Villarreal, who is just 25 years old, faces a charge of interstate threatening communication. His sentencing is set for September 21, and he could face a maximum of five years in prison according to U.S. House code.
On June 28, 2025, Villarreal decided to leave his home with a shocking plan: to drive to Washington, D.C., with the intention of overthrowing the U.S. government. He was armed with several weapons, including an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle, a .45-caliber pistol, and a 9mm pistol. Along with these firearms, he also packed a Bible, a copy of the Texas Penal Code, extra loaded magazines, and multiple boxes of ammunition, as well as a police scanner and binoculars.
Villarreal even attempted to recruit military veterans through social media to join him in his dangerous mission. However, his plans were thwarted when a concerned friend saw his post online and alerted the FBI, fearing it could lead to a mass murder situation. Another friend also contacted local police with concerns about Villarreal’s intentions.
Despite initial determination, Villarreal returned to his home in Hondo around 8 p.m. on June 29. That same evening, the FBI searched his residence and discovered military smoke grenades along with the weapons and equipment he had packed for his trip.
Villarreal was arrested three days later on July 2, 2025. U.S. Attorney Simmons expressed gratitude that friends and family recognized the seriousness of Villarreal’s threats, stating, “Thankfully, in this case, friends and family members recognized the veracity of the threat and contacted the FBI, preventing what could have been a mass casualty event.”
This case serves as a reminder of the importance of speaking up when something seems wrong. Simmons emphasized the necessity of community vigilance in preventing potential violence, saying, “That single decision can lead to a swift response and lives saved, as it did in this case.”
