During these disturbances, ten members of the New York Police Department (NYPD) sustained injuries, with one officer being struck in the head by a glass bottle. The violence escalated as crowds climbed atop police vehicles, resulting in shattered windshields and considerable damage to four patrol cars.

Approximately 10,000 fans gathered in several locations north of Madison Square Garden, spanning between Fifth and Eighth avenues. As the game progressed, the atmosphere shifted from festive to chaotic, leading to reckless and dangerous behavior.

Reports indicate that some individuals jumped on moving vehicles, ignited fireworks amidst large groups of people, and threw glass bottles at both the crowd and law enforcement. Additionally, there were instances of physical altercations and theft, with one group reportedly breaking into a tractor-trailer and tossing items into the crowd.

The NYPD emphasized that such behavior underscores the necessity of their increased presence around Madison Square Garden, especially during significant sporting events. Their goal is to ensure that celebrations remain safe and enjoyable for all attendees.

In a statement, the NYPD said: “This is an exciting time for the Knicks and for fans across New York City. The NYPD wants New Yorkers to be able to enjoy these celebrations, but our primary responsibility is to ensure that everyone can do so safely. Once again, there were large crowds of people who engaged in incredibly reckless and dangerous behavior last night both during and after the game. This demonstrates exactly why the NYPD has increased our presence in and around Madison Square Garden.”
