STORY HIGHLIGHTS

A Rich History

GRUENE, Texas – Constructed in 1878 by Heinrich Gruene, Gruene Hall stands as a remarkable piece of history, showcasing the sturdy craftsmanship of German settlers. The hall’s wooden floors have endured countless events, from lively concerts to energetic gatherings.

“We’ve seen loud concerts and lots of people jumping and stomping,” said Tim Conway, Senior Director of Operations at Momentous Concepts, the company managing Gruene Hall.

Historically a popular social spot, Gruene Hall has gained legendary status due to its recent focus on live country music. The venue has hosted numerous prominent artists, and the list keeps expanding.

“‘Asleep At The Wheel’ was one of the first bands to play here,” Conway shared. “And, of course, George Strait made his mark here too.”

Adding to the hall’s impressive roster are icons like Garth Brooks, Willie Nelson, and the recent addition of Kacey Musgraves. Gruene Hall is a cherished venue that many hope remains unchanged.

In nearly 150 years, Gruene Hall has maintained its unique character, rarely undergoing significant changes.

What is Changing

“We want everything to look the same when you walk into Gruene Hall,” Conway emphasized. “You can come as a kid, then return as an adult with your kids, and it still feels familiar.”

When Gruene Hall decided to make improvements, they took great care to preserve the venue’s aesthetic.

Recently, they installed air conditioning to replace the swamp coolers, which were ineffective during the hot summer concerts. According to Conway, the venue will now be 15 to 20 degrees cooler.

To maintain the hall’s original appearance, the same air ducts previously used for the swamp coolers were utilized for the new A/C units.

“Everything we do is very intentional,” Conway noted.

Why Did They Make the Change?

“We decided to make this change based on customer feedback over the years,” Conway explained. “People have said it gets hot during the summer, and we want our guests to feel comfortable and enjoy their time here.”

Some artists were hesitant to perform at Gruene Hall due to the summer heat, prompting the need for a more comfortable environment.

After so many years without air conditioning, one might wonder why this change is happening now.

“We’re receiving more feedback than ever before,” Conway stated, underscoring the importance of listening to their audience.
