Taxpayers in several Texas communities have expressed growing concerns regarding the use of automated license plate readers (LPR) supplied by AI companies, particularly following the recent call from the governor to halt all new contracts for these surveillance technologies. In response to these concerns, some municipalities have opted to discontinue their existing contracts altogether.

The City has acknowledged the ongoing situation related to automated license plate readers and is closely monitoring developments at the state level. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has announced a pause on new permits for LPR systems along state-owned roadways, which has prompted local governments to reassess their use of this technology.

Despite the state-level pause, the TxDOT’s action does not mandate that local governments discontinue their existing LPR systems or prohibit their general use. This distinction has led to some confusion among residents and local leaders regarding the future of these surveillance technologies in their communities.

City officials have indicated that, as of now, there are no additional changes to their use of LPR technology. They emphasize that, similar to other public-safety technologies, they will continue to monitor applicable state requirements and evaluate their practices as necessary to ensure compliance and community safety.

In light of these developments, a community protest against the AI cameras is scheduled for Friday in Kerrville, organized by the Kerr Freedom Coalition. The protest will take place at the intersection of Junction Highway and Harper Highway from 4:30 PM to 7 PM. Organizers aim to advocate for personal freedoms and protest what they perceive as government overreach into privacy. This rally follows a similar event held just a week prior, underscoring the community’s growing discontent with surveillance practices.
