In the recent San Antonio special election, voters decisively approved Proposition A, which aims to extend funding for the Pre-K 4 SA program for another 20 years. With a significant majority, 286,882 votes (73%) were cast in favor, while 108,607 votes (27%) were against the measure. This result was celebrated by the Political Action Committee supporting Pre-K 4 SA, who announced victory with 227,205 votes (72%) reported by 8 p.m. on election night.
“This investment will help create more opportunities for children to succeed, support educators and child-care providers,” the PAC stated, emphasizing the importance of accessible early learning opportunities for working families.
Background on Pre-K 4 SA
Proposition A was a critical item on the November 3 ballot, seeking to reauthorize the existing one-eighth-cent sales tax funding for Pre-K 4 SA without increasing the tax rate. The program, first approved by voters in 2012 under former Mayor Julián Castro, has already seen funding renewed in 2020.
As of now, Pre-K 4 SA serves approximately 2,000 children directly and supports an additional 5,000 through partner providers. This expansive reach highlights the program’s role in enhancing early childhood education in the community.
The initiative does not only focus on direct education; it also provides professional development for thousands of early childhood educators and collaborates with nearly 100 childcare providers. If the extension is approved, plans are set to expand infant and toddler care, strengthen existing partnerships, and increase childcare options for families working non-traditional hours.
In case the proposition had been rejected, current funding would have remained in place until March 2029, with the possibility of the City Council placing the issue before voters again in 2027 or 2028.
The overwhelming support for Proposition A reflects a community commitment to investing in early childhood education and ensuring that children have access to quality learning environments from a young age. For more election results and updates, visit our homepage and the Vote 2026 page.
