SAN ANTONIO – In a surprising turn of events, the San Antonio Spurs announced that both Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle will miss the game against the Portland Trail Blazers scheduled for Wednesday night. The absence of these key players raises questions about the Spurs’ strategy as they approach the end of the regular season.

Wembanyama’s absence is due to a rib contusion he sustained during Monday’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers, while Castle is sidelined with soreness in his right knee. Their injuries come at a critical point in the season, especially for Wembanyama, who is on the cusp of meeting the NBA’s eligibility requirement for awards. He needs to play a minimum of 20 minutes in one more game to qualify for the required 65 games this season.

As the Spurs look ahead, they have two games remaining after the matchup with the Trail Blazers: a Friday night game against the Dallas Mavericks and a Sunday matchup with the Denver Nuggets. The team is optimistic about the return of both players, stating that they are hopeful Wembanyama and Castle will be ready to play against the Mavericks.

During the team’s shootaround on Wednesday, both players participated, which offers a glimmer of hope for Spurs fans. Veteran player Harrison Barnes commented on Wembanyama’s recovery, stating, “I can’t tell you too much of how (Wembanyama) looked, but he heals fast.” This sentiment is reassuring, especially considering Wembanyama’s recent performance where he scored 17 points, alongside five rebounds and three blocks in just under 16 minutes against the 76ers.

Despite these setbacks, the Spurs have secured the Southwest Division title and are guaranteed to finish no worse than second in the Western Conference standings. Currently, they trail the Oklahoma City Thunder, who lead the conference with a record of 63-16, by three games.

As the season winds down, the health and readiness of key players like Wembanyama and Castle will be crucial for the Spurs as they aim for success in the playoffs.
