BRYAN, Texas – The boxing world is in mourning following the tragic death of 26-year-old professional boxer Hannah Rapp. Rapp was riding her bicycle along a rural road in Texas when she was struck by a vehicle, an incident that has raised questions about road safety for cyclists.
On Saturday morning, Rapp was cycling with a companion when Charles Medina, 31, allegedly passed the duo in his vehicle before stopping, reversing, and striking Rapp. The Brazos County Sheriff’s Office reported that rescue workers quickly responded and transported Rapp to a nearby hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. This heartbreaking incident occurred approximately 80 miles northwest of Houston.

In a statement, World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaimán Saldivar expressed the profound impact of Rapp’s loss on the international boxing community. “She was an exceptional fighter, but above all, an invaluable member of our boxing family,” he stated. “We join in the grief that overwhelms her loved ones, her team, and all those who had the privilege of knowing and supporting her throughout her brilliant career.”
Originally from Yorktown, Indiana, Rapp graduated from Purdue University in 2022 and relocated to Texas in 2024. She fulfilled a dual role as a fire and life safety inspector at Texas A&M while pursuing her boxing career. Rapp held an impressive record of 8-0-1, and just last month, she challenged Tiara Brown for the WBC women’s featherweight title in Orlando, Florida, although she lost by unanimous decision.

Following the incident, Medina was arrested and charged with manslaughter. He is currently being held on a $250,000 bail, with no attorney listed in jail and court records. Investigators are still working to determine the motive behind the tragic event.
