DALLAS – In a thrilling NBA matchup, rookie Cooper Flagg of the Dallas Mavericks made headlines by scoring an astounding 51 points, becoming the first teenager to achieve this milestone in an NBA game. This remarkable feat came during a challenging game against the Orlando Magic, which ultimately ended in a 138-127 loss for the Mavericks.

The excitement for Flagg’s historic performance was marred by the ejections of head coach Jason Kidd and teammate Naji Marshall. Their dismissals occurred after they protested a no-call following a foul committed by Desmond Bane against Flagg early in the fourth quarter. Kidd was ejected after receiving just one technical foul, while Marshall’s ejection came shortly after, adding to the intensity of the game.

“It’s great to see,” Flagg remarked about his performance, highlighting his impressive shooting night where he made 19 of 30 attempts from the field and converted all seven of his free throws. This performance surpassed his previous career high of 49 points, achieved earlier in the season against the Charlotte Hornets.

Flagg expressed gratitude for the support from his coach and teammates, stating, “I know that coach has my back and Naji … I know he has my back for sure out there. Just seeing their emotion, seeing them fight for me and fight for the calls. Definitely some emotion, and motivated me even further.”

Despite exiting the game with 45 points, Flagg’s assistant coach Frank Vogel assured him that he was merely resting him. Vogel later called a timeout to reinstate Flagg with just over three minutes left in the game. Flagg then made history by hitting a corner three-pointer and a foul shot to clinch his 50th point amidst a significant comeback effort from the Mavericks.

Flagg’s scoring surge came while the Mavericks were down by as much as 30 points. His fourth-quarter performance, which included 24 points, was a testament to his scoring ability under pressure, although it did not secure a win for the team, marking their 14th consecutive home loss, the longest streak since the 1993-94 season.

Reflecting on his performance, Flagg stated, “It’s always fun getting into that type of mode… But I like to win. That was my main focus. It’s hard for me to fully enjoy myself out there when we’re down 20, down 10, down 15, for the majority of the game.” He also commented on the foul he received from Bane, indicating that he believed it was a clear infraction.

Kidd, who viewed the game from the sidelines after being ejected, expressed pride in Flagg’s accomplishment, drawing parallels to legendary NBA figures. “He should be rookie of the year,” Kidd declared. “It’s unbelievable. The country’s not watching the same thing we get to watch on a daily basis. He’s in rare air.”

Although the Mavericks could not end their home losing streak, Flagg’s remarkable performance provided a bright spot in a difficult season. As the team continues to seek improvement, Flagg’s potential shines brightly, leaving fans hopeful for the future.
