Tillis says he’s ready to move ahead with confirming Warsh as Trump’s pick as Fed chair

WASHINGTON – The political landscape surrounding the Federal Reserve’s leadership has shifted significantly. Republican Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina, who previously stalled the confirmation of President Donald Trump’s nominee, Kevin Warsh, announced on Sunday that he would no longer oppose Warsh’s nomination. This change comes in light of the Department of Justice concluding its investigation into Jerome Powell, the current Federal Reserve chair.

Senator Tillis’s decision alleviates a substantial obstacle for Trump’s administration, which seeks to replace Powell with Warsh, a former high-ranking Fed official. Powell, who has faced consistent pressure from the White House to lower interest rates, was nearing the end of his term, scheduled to conclude on May 15, when Tillis’s opposition effectively stalled Warsh’s nomination in the GOP-controlled Senate Banking Committee.

“I am prepared to move on with the confirmation of Mr. Warsh. I think he’s going to be a great Fed chair,” Tillis stated during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” This announcement followed the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia closing the investigation regarding the Fed’s extensive building renovations, which had been a focal point of scrutiny.

The renovation project, initially estimated at $1.9 billion, has ballooned to $2.5 billion, drawing criticism from President Trump. In July, Powell requested an inspector general’s review of the project, and the internal watchdog is currently examining it for potential mismanagement and cost overruns.

Tillis expressed confidence that no wrongdoing would be found in relation to the renovations, suggesting that while there may be some poor decision-making, it did not warrant criminal prosecution. He emphasized that the conclusion of the DOJ’s investigation was crucial for maintaining the independence of the Federal Reserve.

The Senate Banking Committee has announced plans to vote on Warsh’s nomination on Wednesday. Opposition, however, persists. Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren criticized the nomination, labeling Warsh as “nothing more than President Trump’s sock puppet” and questioning his commitment to maintaining the Fed’s independence.

During his confirmation hearing, Warsh assured senators that he would not bend to presidential pressure regarding interest rates. However, President Trump openly expressed his expectation for immediate rate cuts, indicating that Warsh’s independence may be scrutinized.

Tillis has been vocal about Powell’s situation, denouncing the DOJ’s inquiry as a “vindictive prosecution” that threatens the Fed’s autonomy. He mentioned that he received assurances from the DOJ regarding the investigation’s closure, reinforcing his support for Warsh’s confirmation.

In response to questions about Warsh’s path forward, President Trump characterized it as “smooth,” expressing confidence in his nominee’s capabilities. The president has previously expressed frustration over the rising costs of the Fed’s renovation project, indicating ongoing concerns about financial management within the institution.

The DOJ’s investigation was part of a broader scrutiny into Trump’s perceived adversaries, which has faced challenges in establishing a basis for criminal conduct. Recent legal actions against prominent figures linked to Trump have similarly struggled to gain traction.

As the Fed prepares for potential leadership changes, Powell has the option to remain on the board until January 2028, though he has yet to decide his future role. Warsh, who has a background in finance and served on the Fed’s board of governors, was nominated by Trump earlier this year and is now poised for confirmation.
