SEATTLE – Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson made headlines recently by deciding to remove the city’s police chief, Shon Barnes. This move has sparked a lot of conversation and debate in the community.
Mayor Wilson described her decision as “the right decision at the right time,” but she hasn’t shared all the details behind it. This change in leadership comes in the wake of a tragic gang-related shooting that occurred during the Bite of Seattle food festival, just near the iconic Space Needle. The incident resulted in the deaths of two bystanders, and a 15-year-old suspect was arrested in connection with the chaos.
Many community members criticized both Wilson and Barnes for their slow response in providing crucial information about the shooting, including whether there were still suspects on the loose. This lack of communication during a major public event raised significant concerns among residents.
Barnes, who made history as Seattle’s second Black police chief, was recognized for his efforts in recruiting new officers and reducing crime in downtown Seattle. His removal has drawn backlash from various Black community organizations, business leaders, and even some City Council members, all of whom voiced their disappointment with Wilson’s decision.
During a news conference, Mayor Wilson praised Barnes for his service but insisted that she had a better perspective on the operations of the Seattle Police Department than her critics. She acknowledged that the shooting incident played a role in her decision but mentioned that there were multiple factors involved.
As the interim chief, Andre Sayles announced plans to increase police presence at public events for the remainder of the summer, aiming to ensure safety at future gatherings. He also expressed confidence that investigators are closing in on additional suspects related to the shooting.
The shooting occurred during the final hours of the Bite of Seattle festival, which attracts hundreds of food vendors and performers every year. In total, three people were killed, including one suspect, while four others were injured, including a young child.
