DHS voter probe may break state laws and wrongly implicate US citizens, whistleblower alleges

NEW YORK – A recent report has raised serious concerns about actions taken by the Trump administration in the lead-up to November’s elections. According to a whistleblower’s statement released on Monday, federal employees are being instructed to misrepresent themselves when using voter lookup tools, potentially violating state laws.

This initiative, called the “Unlawful Voter Initiative,” is part of a probe by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The whistleblower claims that employees are being asked to create federal records about voters based on questionable data, which could wrongly accuse U.S. citizens of being involved in illegal voting. Such actions could lead to unnecessary investigations and legal troubles for innocent people.

The whistleblower’s anonymous report, which spans nearly 30 pages, was made public by Democratic Senate leaders Chuck Schumer and Alex Padilla. It details how staff members from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) were forced to abandon their regular duties to undergo a quick, two-hour training session. They were then ordered to run lists of individuals through state voter registration systems to identify “unlawful voters.”

The training sessions reportedly instructed agents to examine 40 individuals each day, providing only about 12 minutes to verify if each person was a legal voter. If an individual was deemed not to be a citizen, agents were directed to create federal records about them.

Schumer and Padilla criticized the initiative as an attempt by Trump to meddle in elections, arguing that the rushed timelines hinder proper investigations. They pointed out that the data used by DHS may not align with state records, leading to potentially flawed conclusions. “We just got more proof of Trump’s vile schemes to rig our elections,” Schumer remarked at a news conference.

The White House has yet to respond to requests for comments regarding these allegations. Historically, the Trump administration has claimed that noncitizen voting poses a significant risk of fraud, despite research indicating that such instances are incredibly rare. Trump has also advocated for the U.S. Postal Service to send mail ballots exclusively to verified U.S. citizens, and the Justice Department has attempted to obtain detailed voter data from multiple states.

The whistleblower’s report indicates a concerning tactic where federal employees are directed to pose as individual voters to access state voter records. In several states, including Virginia, laws limit who can access voter lookup tools to individuals who confirm they are looking up their own records. Other states, like California, require personal information such as a driver’s license number or partial Social Security number for access.

When some officers expressed concerns about the legality of these searches, they were reportedly told to proceed regardless. Schumer and Padilla have since sent a letter to DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin, demanding more information about the initiative and asking for it to be halted.

A spokesperson for DHS defended the initiative, stating that the department is focused on investigating and removing noncitizens who vote, asserting that the department is simply cross-referencing publicly available data. They emphasized that these actions are essential to safeguard the integrity of elections.

The whistleblower’s account was produced by the Democracy Defenders Fund, a watchdog group that is representing the whistleblower due to their fears of retaliation. They feel it is vital to expose what they describe as misconduct and mismanagement within the DHS.
