SALT LAKE CITY – In a shocking case that has captured national attention, prosecutors have highlighted an engraved bullet in the murder of Charlie Kirk, claiming the inscription “Hey Facist! CATCH!” signifies that Kirk was specifically targeted due to his political views. This detail may play a crucial role in the upcoming trial of the defendant, Tyler Robinson.
The prosecution is arguing that the motive behind the crime was politically charged, which could significantly impact whether Robinson faces the death penalty if convicted. On the other hand, his defense team is working to counter this narrative, suggesting that the evidence does not definitively prove a political motive.
Robinson, 23 years old, faces serious charges including aggravated murder. He turned himself in just one day after the shooting incident that took place during a political event featuring Kirk at Utah Valley University. Before his untimely death, Charlie Kirk was a prominent conservative figure and co-founder of Turning Point USA, an organization recognized for mobilizing young conservatives to support political candidates, particularly during the Trump administration. Kirk’s public stance against same-sex marriage and gender-affirming care contrasted sharply with Robinson’s reported relationship with his roommate, Lance Twiggs, who had contemplated a gender transition.
Prosecutors allege that Robinson left a handwritten note for Twiggs that stated, “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I took it.” In a recorded interview, Twiggs mentioned that he had never previously heard Robinson express negative feelings about Kirk, nor did he frequently discuss gender issues, although he sometimes touched upon political topics.
Investigators have presented DNA evidence linking Robinson to the suspected murder weapon and the tool used to engrave the bullet. However, the defense has raised questions about the reliability of these DNA tests and other evidence presented during the hearings.
