MIAMI – Tropical Storm Genevieve has officially become a hurricane in the Pacific Ocean, located southwest of Mexico. This storm is predicted to strengthen even further and might reach major hurricane status soon, but it is expected to stay safely out to sea, moving parallel to the coast.

As of now, Genevieve has maximum sustained winds of 90 mph (150 kph), which classifies it as a Category 1 hurricane. To be considered a major hurricane, the storm needs to reach Category 3 or higher, meaning it has potential to cause more significant damage.

Currently, Genevieve’s center is located approximately 500 miles (810 kilometers) south-southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico. It is moving west-northwest at a speed of 17 mph (28 kph).

Although there are no coastal watches or warnings in place, the National Hurricane Center has indicated that the storm’s swells could create “life-threatening surf and rip current conditions” along parts of Mexico’s southwestern coast. These dangerous conditions could affect southern areas of the Baja California Peninsula by Sunday night or Monday.

In addition to Genevieve, Hurricane Fausto has weakened to a Category 1 storm and is heading in the general direction of the Hawaiian Islands. Although it is expected to downgrade to a tropical storm soon, forecasters warn that it could still produce hazardous surf. People in Hawaii should keep an eye on its progression.

Fausto currently has maximum sustained winds of 90 mph (150 kph) and is located around 995 miles (1,600 kilometers) east of Hilo. It is moving west at 13 mph (20 kph).
