Christa Pike, a woman who survived a botched lethal injection in Tennessee, has opened up about her ongoing struggles since the incident. In her first public statement after the failed execution, which took place on September 30, she expressed her feelings of pain and confusion.

Pike, who is 50 years old, stated, “There hasn’t been a moment since that night when I haven’t been in pain. My body hurts. My arms hurt. My hands hurt. My throat hurts. I still struggle to speak.” She described her experience not just as physical suffering but also emotional turmoil, highlighting the pain in her mind and soul.

Back in 1995, Pike was involved in the tragic stabbing death of her classmate, 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. At just 18 years old, she was one of the youngest women to receive a death sentence. Despite her past, Pike had prepared herself for execution, never expecting to survive the process.

After the execution attempt, which involved two doses of a drug called pentobarbital, Pike woke up in a hospital bed, bewildered and alone. She attributed the failure of her execution to what she called “incompetence.” She expressed concern not only for herself but also for the family of her victim, stating, “I continue to think about my victim’s family and the terrible pain and loss they have endured.”

The situation surrounding her execution has led to significant consequences. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has called for an investigation, and the state’s prison chief has resigned following the incident. In light of what occurred, the governor has postponed other lethal injections scheduled for this year.

Pike expressed gratitude for the medical staff who saved her life, saying, “I don’t know why I survived that night. I don’t know what comes next. Some days, finding hope is harder than others.” She emphasized that healing is her current focus, taking it one day at a time while appreciating the kindness shown to her by others.

According to her legal team, Pike suffered severe injuries from the failed lethal injection, including burned and blistered arms. Medical experts have speculated that an issue with the IV line may have caused the lethal drugs to pool in her tissue instead of entering her bloodstream.

Her attorneys are advocating for her sentence to be reduced to life imprisonment, although Governor Lee indicated that unless the courts decide otherwise, her sentence is likely to remain unchanged. Pike’s statement, which was dictated to her legal team, reflects her ongoing recovery journey. After her hospitalization, she was transferred back to the Debra K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center, where she continues to navigate the aftermath of her experience.
