US attacks Iran and Tehran retaliates across the Middle East as both vie for control of strait

DUBAI – Early Tuesday morning, the U.S. military launched strikes against Iran, marking a significant escalation in ongoing tensions. This military action came just hours after President Donald Trump announced the reinstatement of a blockade on Iran in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. The president also hinted at a controversial plan to charge vessels for safe passage, a move that could fundamentally alter longstanding U.S. policy supporting freedom of navigation globally.

In retaliation, Iran targeted two tankers associated with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as they traversed the strait, resulting in the tragic death of one mariner and injuries to eight others. The UAE has threatened to respond militarily, raising the specter of renewed conflict in a region already fraught with volatility.

The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial waterway, accounting for approximately 20% of the world’s traded crude oil and natural gas. Following the strikes, the price of benchmark Brent crude oil surged to over $84, a one-month high, sparking concerns about rising global energy costs.

The U.S. Central Command reported that its strikes targeted various locations in Iran, including Abu Musa, Bandar Abbas, and Bushehr, focusing on Iranian coastal defense systems, missile sites, and maritime capabilities. Although Iran acknowledged the attacks, it has yet to provide information on casualties or damage.

The U.S. military asserted that these operations aim to impose significant costs on Iranian forces, thereby degrading their capacity to threaten civilian vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump described the military action as “another major attack,” emphasizing that the U.S. is determined to control the strait and protect its interests.

The proposed toll on ships passing through the strait represents a stark departure from previous U.S. policy, which upheld the principle of free navigation. This shift raises concerns about escalating tensions and potential violations of international maritime norms.

The UAE’s Defense Ministry confirmed that Iranian forces launched cruise missiles at the tankers, leading to fires that were ultimately extinguished. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard claimed responsibility, stating that the vessels had ignored warnings. Additionally, Bahrain faced missile alerts as Iran retaliated against the recent U.S. airstrikes, although no immediate damage or casualties were reported.

The situation has prompted the U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the U.S. Consulate in Dubai to cancel consular appointments due to heightened security concerns. Jordan also reported intercepting missiles fired from Iran, indicating that the regional hostilities are affecting multiple countries.

Trump recently commented that the agreement established last month was “built to test” Iran, suggesting that the nation failed to meet its obligations. Iran maintains its right to manage maritime traffic and potentially charge fees, a claim disputed by the U.S.

The U.S. military plans to enforce a blockade on Iranian ports, reinstating measures that had been lifted as part of the interim peace deal earlier this year. As tensions escalate, global observers remain wary of the implications for international trade and regional stability, particularly given the historical context of U.S. naval operations aimed at ensuring freedom of navigation.
