In a significant leadership change, Cracker Barrel’s CEO Julie Masino is set to step down after nearly a year of turbulent shifts aimed at rebranding the beloved chain. This decision comes on the heels of a challenging period marked by a strong backlash from customers regarding recent attempts to modernize the restaurant’s image.
Effective August 10, David Deno will take over the role of CEO. Deno brings a wealth of experience to the table, having previously served as the CEO of Bloomin’ Brands, the parent company of popular dining establishments like Outback Steakhouse. His background also includes executive positions at Best Buy and Yum Brands, which oversees global giants like KFC and Taco Bell.
Last year, Cracker Barrel announced a new branding initiative that included a simplified logo featuring only the company name. The Lebanon, Tennessee-based chain, which operates 660 restaurants across 43 states, aimed to attract a younger demographic by modernizing its restaurants. Changes included lighter, less cluttered dining environments designed to enhance customer experience.
However, the rebranding effort sparked significant backlash from loyal customers who felt that the changes undermined the brand’s traditional appeal. Following a notable decline in sales, the company chose to reverse many of the proposed changes, yet the financial repercussions lingered. Recent reports indicate that Cracker Barrel’s same-store sales dropped by 1.8% in the fiscal third quarter ending May 1, prompting concerns about the chain’s recovery.
On Monday, Cracker Barrel’s stock took a hit, falling by 4% in morning trading, reflecting investor concerns regarding the future direction of the company under new leadership.
