LIVE OAK COUNTY, Texas – As the Nueces River continues to rise, more than a dozen first responder agencies are actively preparing for the potential of severe flooding in the area. Local authorities are urging residents to stay alert and take necessary precautions.
As of 6 p.m. on Thursday, County Road 436 has been closed due to significant flooding, with County Road 438 also facing similar restrictions. These closures underscore the immediate threat posed by rising waters.
“The Nueces River is on the rise,” stated Live Oak County Judge James Liska. Recent measurements show the river exceeding 35 feet, with forecasts suggesting it could crest near 40 feet over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
The NWS warns that at 40 feet, significant flooding could extend miles from the river’s main channel, potentially inundating homes in flood-prone areas from Three Rivers to Lake Corpus Christi. Residents are strongly advised to prepare for possible evacuations.
For those seeking shelter, George West Junior High School, located at 904 Houston St., is available 24 hours a day, with accommodations for pets. This resource is crucial for residents forced to evacuate their homes.
Reports indicate that up to 4 feet of water has accumulated in River Creek Acres Subdivision, affecting several homes. Similarly, Kellner Camp along County Road 336 is experiencing flooding, with water several feet deep surrounding residences. Access to J.I. Hailey Subdivision has been cut off due to flooding on Antelope Lane, with water levels nearing homes in Buckeye Knoll Subdivision, just west of Swinny Switch.
Residents living near the Nueces River are urged to remain vigilant as floodwaters approach. Judge Liska emphasized that even if homes remain dry, flooded roads could hinder escape routes, leaving residents trapped.
“Your road may end up like this,” he remarked, indicating the flooded County Road 438, highlighting the potential dangers that could arise during this critical time.
