SAN ANTONIO – Air conditioning problems at Holmes High School have caused significant disruption to after-school activities, prompting concerns among students and families alike.

On Tuesday morning, the Northside Independent School District (NISD) reported that the school’s chillers experienced a malfunction. Although technicians managed to restore the system by 1 p.m., the cooling was insufficient to combat the high temperatures within the building.

By 5:30 p.m., maintenance teams were actively working on one of the two cooling units and monitoring the indoor climate to ensure a comfortable environment for students before classes resumed the following day.

“Remember, this is the hottest time of the day, and the chillers were off for a portion of the day, so they are working to catch up to cool the building down,” explained the NISD spokesperson, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

Students expressed their discomfort during this heat wave. Michael, a freshman at Holmes High School, shared his experience: “It was real hot. The building that was the hottest was the end building. There were people who physically couldn’t go into class because they were seeing black spots. For me, I felt like I was going to throw up.”

Michael also expressed his surprise that classes weren’t canceled given the circumstances. His comments reflect a broader concern among students about the adequacy of the school’s response to the extreme heat.

Despite the challenges faced, NISD has stated that classes are expected to resume as normal on Wednesday. The district has assured families that steps are being taken to address the issue promptly and effectively, highlighting their commitment to providing a safe and conducive learning environment.
