‘You should not be here,’ Trump tells CNN at UN as standoff with media outlets persists

NEW YORK – President Donald Trump recently visited the United Nations and had a tense encounter with CNN journalist Kaitlan Collins. As he arrived at the U.N., he surprised many by telling Collins, “You should not be here.” This comment reflects the ongoing conflict between Trump and certain news outlets.

Trump’s comment came as he entered the U.N. for his speech to the General Assembly. He remarked, “It’s an honor to be here,” but quickly shifted to expressing surprise that CNN was covering him. This interaction highlighted the friction between the president and media outlets that he often criticizes as “fake news.”

Despite Trump’s claims, CNN had not stated that they would stop covering him. In fact, the network had been banned from White House grounds for a few days prior to this event, along with other outlets like MS NOW and Politico. However, CNN was still allowed into the U.N. as part of their regular media credentials.

This incident serves as a reminder of the growing tensions between Trump and the media. Just the day before, a joint lawsuit was filed by CNN, MS NOW, and Politico, challenging the constitutionality of the White House’s ban on their access. A hearing on the matter was scheduled shortly after Trump’s visit.

Trump’s Views on Media Coverage

Later during his U.N. visit, Trump doubled down on his criticism of negative media coverage, labeling it as harmful to the country. When asked if he would allow CNN and other banned outlets back in if the court ruled against the White House, he expressed skepticism about the fairness of the judge involved, further fueling the heated exchange.

Trump has frequently used the term “fake news” to describe stories he disagrees with, but has not provided specific examples of what he considers false coverage. This pattern of conflict has been a significant part of his presidency, particularly during his second term.

Media Response and Solidarity

The day began without the usual network pool coverage, which is typically standard for presidential events. Following Trump’s ban on CNN, the other networks decided not to cover the day’s events until CNN’s role was reinstated. This move showcased solidarity among news outlets, with organizations like the Associated Press and The Washington Post choosing not to publish photographs from the presidential events.

Despite the ban, Trump was still visible to global audiences through UNTV, the United Nations’ official broadcast service, and through coverage by journalists reporting on other international leaders.

Potential Impacts on Coverage and Freedom of Press

Media analysts suggest that the lack of access could have long-term consequences for a president who thrives on media visibility. Robert Thompson, a director at Syracuse University, noted that this ban likely won’t last long, as it doesn’t serve Trump’s interests. He emphasized that audiences today have numerous sources for news, so they won’t miss out entirely on important information.

However, Thompson also raised concerns about Trump’s comments labeling negative coverage as “dangerous,” which could have serious implications for press freedoms. Such remarks challenge the fundamental principles of a free press, which are crucial for a healthy democracy.

As this situation continues to evolve, the relationship between the media and the Trump administration remains a significant topic of discussion, raising questions about transparency, accountability, and the role of journalism in society.
