WASHINGTON – One of the countless memorable lines that have tumbled out of the “Star Trek” universe over the years is this gem, originally from a 20th-century poet named Delmore Schwartz: “Time is the fire in which we burn.”

This line was first spoken as an existential warning to Capt. Jean-Luc Picard in the 1994 film “Star Trek Generations.” However, it resonates even more this week as fans grapple with the sudden loss of two beloved figures from the franchise.

On Sunday, Walter Koenig, known for his role as Ensign Pavel Chekov in the original series from the 1960s, passed away at the age of 90. Just a few days later, the entertainment world mourned the death of Patrick Stewart, renowned for portraying Captain Picard since 1987 and more recently in “Star Trek: Picard.”

For a fan base that has always embraced the vision of a brighter future, the recent losses have struck a painful chord.

“What a heartbreaking week it has been,” said William Shatner, who famously played Captain James T. Kirk. He is one of the last remaining cast members from the original series, alongside George Takei, who portrayed Hikaru Sulu.

‘Star Trek’ has had a profound impact on modern culture

Often seen as just a sci-fi series, “Star Trek” has significantly influenced popular culture. The original series was groundbreaking for its diverse cast, which included actors from various backgrounds, and it introduced themes of unity and exploration. The first space shuttle was even named “Enterprise” after the show’s starship, thanks to a letter-writing campaign by fans.

Catchphrases like “Beam me up, Scotty” and “Make it so” have become part of everyday language. As the franchise’s new era on streaming platforms comes to an end, fans worldwide are left wondering what the future holds for “Star Trek.”

Online forums, once buzzing with lively debates about the show’s intricacies, now overflow with tributes to Koenig and Stewart. One user humorously pleaded to “bubble wrap” the remaining cast members, highlighting the deep connection fans feel towards these actors.

Many of Koenig’s and Stewart’s colleagues have expressed their sorrow. Akiva Goldsman, co-creator of “Star Trek: Picard,” praised Stewart’s contributions, stating that his portrayal of Picard “permanently expanded” the universe of “Star Trek.”

A legacy of diversity and representation

Koenig’s character, Chekov, was introduced during the Cold War, representing a Russian officer in a time of U.S.-Soviet tension. This was part of creator Gene Roddenberry’s vision for a more inclusive future. The original series was revolutionary, featuring a diverse crew, including Asian and African characters, and strong female roles.

Sadly, with Koenig’s passing, only Shatner and Takei remain from the original cast. Both continue to engage with fans, with Shatner recently launching a heavy-metal band and Takei remaining active on social media.

Takei and Koenig shared a close friendship, and Takei expressed his grief, calling Koenig a “thoughtful man” and a “loyal friend.”

Finding hope amidst loss

“Star Trek” has always explored themes of aging and mortality, particularly in productions like “Star Trek: Picard.” Yet, the franchise embodies an enduring sense of optimism. Even in its darkest moments, “Star Trek” conveys the message that humanity will continue to thrive.

In “Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country,” Captain Kirk reflects on the future as the “undiscovered country,” a metaphor for what lies ahead. Shakespeare once wrote about death in “Hamlet,” but “Star Trek” emphasizes that while individuals may pass, the legacy they leave behind endures.

As Shatner wisely said, “None of us will be around forever, but ‘Star Trek’ will.”

Ted Anthony, director of new storytelling and newsroom innovation at The Associated Press, has been watching “Star Trek” since he was 18 months old. His younger son’s middle name is Kirk, which is not a coincidence.
