CANNES – John Travolta was recently honored at the Cannes Film Festival with a special award, the honorary Palme d’Or, during the premiere of his first film as a director. This exciting moment took place on Friday, marking a significant milestone in Travolta’s career.
Thierry Frémaux, the festival’s artistic director, surprised Travolta with the award just before the screening of his film, “Propeller One-Way Night Coach.” The actor, visibly touched by the recognition, clutched his chest as he received the trophy from Frémaux.
“You said this would be a special night, but I didn’t know it would mean this,” Travolta expressed to Frémaux, showcasing his heartfelt appreciation for the accolade.
In an emotional moment, Travolta exclaimed, “This is beyond the Oscar!” highlighting the significance of the Palme d’Or to him, especially as he embarks on this new chapter of his filmmaking journey.
Dressed stylishly in a white beret, Travolta walked the iconic Cannes red carpet alongside his 26-year-old daughter, Ella Bleu Travolta. The film he directed, co-produced, and wrote, “Propeller One-Way Night Coach,” is adapted from his own children’s novel published in 1997, making this achievement even more personal for him.
Cannes has a tradition of surprising its guests with honorary Palme d’Or awards. Notably, Tom Cruise received one in 2022, and this year, filmmaker Peter Jackson was honored during the festival’s opening ceremony. Barbara Streisand is also set to receive the prestigious award later in the event.
