SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio window company owner, James Hunter Townsend, is facing serious legal troubles after being indicted on felony theft charges. Investigators allege that he accepted deposits from customers for services that were never delivered, ultimately closing his business without refunding their money.

Townsend, 39, was arrested recently and is charged with third-degree felony theft for amounts ranging between $30,000 to $150,000. He also faces additional charges for theft from elderly customers, involving amounts between $2,500 and $30,000. These serious accusations highlight the importance of consumer protection, especially for vulnerable populations like the elderly.

This arrest follows an indictment from a Bexar County grand jury two months prior, during which Townsend was already on probation for another felony theft case from earlier in 2023. The legal issues surrounding Townsend are compounded by the fact that he is now facing a repeat offender enhancement, which could lead to a more severe sentence.

Numerous complaints from customers began flooding law enforcement and the Texas Attorney General’s Office in May 2022, expressing concerns about Townsend’s business practices. Such complaints are essential for holding businesses accountable and protecting consumers from fraud.

In November 2023, Townsend was indicted for felony theft, and by May 2024, he pleaded no contest to the charges. As part of a plea agreement, he was sentenced to three years of probation and was ordered to make restitution payments exceeding $11,000 to those he defrauded.

Looking ahead, Townsend is scheduled to appear in court on June 8 at Bexar County’s 437th Criminal District Court for this new case. As the legal proceedings unfold, it remains crucial for consumers to be vigilant and informed about their rights when engaging with service providers.

Unfortunately, Townsend’s defense attorney did not respond to inquiries regarding the case, leaving many questions unanswered. This situation serves as a reminder of the significance of transparency and accountability in business practices.
