LOS ANGELES – Singer D4vd, whose real name is David Anthony Burke, has recently made headlines after entering a not guilty plea to serious charges involving the tragic death of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez. The charges include murder, sexual abuse, and dismemberment.
At a recent court hearing, D4vd lost his high-profile private lawyers, including Blair Berk, who has represented many celebrities. They were replaced by a public defender from Los Angeles County. The reasons for this change in legal representation remain unclear.
The defense team stated that the judge approved their request to withdraw after determining that Burke qualified for a court-appointed lawyer. Despite earning over $10 million from his music between 2023 and 2025, it is not known how he qualifies for a public defender, whose role is to assist those who cannot afford legal representation.
Deputy Public Defender Walid Kandeel has taken over D4vd’s defense. During the hearing, Judge Charlaine F. Olmedo denied an initial request to delay the arraignment and scheduled a status conference for October. No trial date has been set as of now.
In July, after a five-day hearing, Judge Olmedo ruled that there was sufficient evidence for Burke to stand trial on multiple serious charges. The case is particularly sensitive as it involves grave allegations of violence against a minor. If convicted, Burke could face the death penalty, but the District Attorney’s office is still deciding whether to pursue this option.
The prosecution claims that Burke killed Rivas Hernandez in April of last year after she threatened to expose alleged sexual abuse. They presented evidence that Burke sent an Uber for her, and she was stabbed when she entered his home. Her dismembered body was later found in the trunk of his car.
D4vd gained popularity as a teen with his unique mix of indie rock, R&B, and lo-fi pop. He hit the music scene with viral hits on social media platforms like TikTok and Spotify, where his songs have garnered over a billion streams.
