NASHVILLE, Tenn. – In Nashville, Tennessee, tensions are rising between the Republican-led state government and the Democrat-led city government as they both vie for control over the city’s airport. However, there’s one idea they can agree on: renaming Nashville International Airport to honor the legendary Dolly Parton.

This proposed change would make Parton the first woman to have an airport named after her among the 50 busiest airports in the United States, a fitting tribute to Tennessee’s beloved icon.

The Push for Parton’s Name

Lydia Popovich, a passionate fan of Dolly Parton, initiated a petition for the airport name change back in 2025. Despite her enormous popularity, Parton has consistently turned down various honors, including a proposed statue at the state Capitol. In response to that proposal, she asked lawmakers to reconsider and expressed hope that such honors might be given in the future, perhaps posthumously.

Momentum Following Parton’s Passing

After Parton’s passing just two weeks ago, the idea of renaming the airport gained significant traction. Popovich’s petition quickly amassed over 175,000 signatures, reflecting widespread public support. This momentum came at a time when the authorities, engaged in their own power struggle, were also considering the renaming.

At a recent meeting of the state-controlled Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority, board members unanimously voted to begin the renaming process, praising Parton and her contributions to the state. Officials indicated that the transition might take over a year and would involve discussions with Parton’s estate regarding profit-sharing from merchandise sales related to the name change.

A Rare Moment of Bipartisanship

Interestingly, this proposal has garnered support from both sides of the political spectrum. Nashville’s Democratic Mayor, Freddie O’Connell, along with the city-controlled Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority, are in favor of the name change. This bipartisan agreement is noteworthy in a time when political disputes often dominate discussions.

O’Connell’s spokesman, Alex Apple, emphasized that both boards would vote in favor, which could facilitate a smoother approval process with the FAA.

Parton’s Legacy and Impact

Dolly Parton, who rose from humble beginnings in the Great Smoky Mountains, became a cultural icon known for her music, acting, and philanthropic efforts. Hits like “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You” have transcended generations, making her a beloved figure across various demographics.

Popovich, who was present at the board meeting, expressed her emotional response to the unanimous decision. She noted, “It’s been a really beautiful experience, especially as you’re grieving someone that was such a great loss. She’s the best of Tennessee. She’s the best of the humans on the planet.”

Through this proposed name change, Nashville aims to celebrate Parton’s life and legacy, allowing the world to see just how much she meant to the people of Tennessee.
