NEW YORK – The public dispute between actors Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni has taken a new turn recently, with the announcement of a settlement related to their ongoing legal battle over the 2024 film “It Ends With Us.”

Just three days after sharing the details of their settlement, Lively’s legal team declared it a “resounding victory.” They claimed that the agreement would bring significant consequences for Baldoni and others involved, suggesting they would now face personal liability for what they described as an abuse of the legal system aimed at silencing Lively.

According to Lively’s attorneys, Michael Gottlieb and Esra Hudson, the settlement means that Baldoni and his co-defendants have waived their right to appeal. This opens the door for potential penalties related to Lively’s legal costs, especially after a countersuit filed by Baldoni was dismissed by U.S. District Judge Lewis J. Liman last June. The countersuit accused Lively, her husband Ryan Reynolds, and their publicist of defamation and extortion.

Legal documents from Lively’s team indicated that the law mandates strict penalties against parties who file retaliatory defamation cases against individuals who report sexual harassment and retaliation. They emphasized that both sides’ acknowledgment of Lively’s concerns in their statement has helped dispel the narrative that she “fabricated” claims of harassment.

The attorneys highlighted that Lively’s mission has always been about accountability for those who misuse legal actions to intimidate survivors of harassment. They asserted that her fight against such practices is ongoing.

On the other side, attorney Bryan Freedman, representing Baldoni, argued that they view the situation as a victory. He claimed that the court had dismissed a majority of Lively’s claims and that she ultimately chose to drop the remaining ones voluntarily. Freedman suggested that Lively’s camp settled because they feared losing in court.

Lively’s initial lawsuit, filed in December 2024, alleged that she faced sexual harassment during the filming of “It Ends With Us,” citing Baldoni’s inappropriate comments about women’s bodies and discussions of sexual experiences. Although some claims were dismissed, some retaliation claims remain, as the judge found that Lively couldn’t claim harassment since she was an independent contractor rather than an employee.

The settlement terms were not publicly disclosed but were formally recorded in court. “It Ends With Us,” based on Colleen Hoover’s popular novel, tackles serious themes of romance and domestic violence. The film had a strong opening, earning $50 million, but the behind-the-scenes tension between Lively and Baldoni raised eyebrows.

Blake Lively is well-known for her roles in “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” and the TV series “Gossip Girl,” while Justin Baldoni gained fame through “Jane the Virgin” and has directed and written projects that challenge societal norms, particularly around masculinity.
