SAN MARCOS, Texas – Exciting times in sports can often turn serious quickly, and that’s exactly what happened with Texas State running back Greg Burrell. Just a day after being arrested for a felony charge, Burrell was dismissed from the Texas State football program.
According to reports from Keff Ciardello, a well-known Texas State athletics reporter, the incident unfolded when San Marcos police received calls about a man dressed in black. Witnesses identified Burrell getting out of a black Audi, opening the trunk, and pulling out a rifle.
Things escalated when Burrell allegedly fired the rifle towards Interstate 35, which was busy with traffic at the time. This alarming situation occurred near the Tanger Outlets in San Marcos, raising serious safety concerns.
When police arrived, they quickly located a vehicle matching the description given by witnesses. Burrell attempted to escape but was apprehended by the officers, who took him into custody.
Investigators later found the rifle, along with shell casings and additional ammunition that matched the weapon. Fortunately, police reported that no one was hit by the gunfire.
Burrell was charged with deadly conduct, which is a third-degree felony for discharging a firearm in a reckless manner. He was booked into Hays County Jail, with a bond set at $5,000, which he managed to pay later that same day.
The 2025 season was a significant one for Burrell, who had joined the Texas State Bobcats after playing his freshman year at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Last season, he was the third-best rusher for Texas State, accumulating 671 yards on 100 carries and scoring three touchdowns. His standout performance was in a thrilling game against Troy, where he rushed for 136 yards.
Texas State head football coach GJ Kinne commented on Burrell’s dismissal, stating, “No longer with us, and we wish him nothing but the best. Excited about the running back group we’ve got.”
As for Burrell, the next steps in his legal journey remain uncertain, with his case assigned to the county’s 428th District Court. This situation serves as a reminder of how quickly things can change in the world of sports, emphasizing the importance of making responsible choices.
