NEW YORK – A shocking revelation has emerged from the ongoing investigation into New York’s Gilgo Beach serial murders. Rex Heuermann, the man who recently admitted guilt in these heinous crimes, shared chilling details with his ex-wife while imprisoned. According to her account, Heuermann confessed that he killed most of his victims in the basement of their old family home.
Asa Ellerup, Heuermann’s ex-wife, revealed this information during a teaser for the upcoming episode of a documentary series titled “The Gilgo Beach Killer: House of Secrets,” which is set to air on NBC’s streaming platform, Peacock. In the teaser, Ellerup states that Heuermann admitted to killing eight women, claiming they were his only victims.
Ellerup explained that Heuermann told her he committed seven of these murders while she was away from home, specifically in the basement of their house located in Massapequa Park, Long Island. In a poignant moment captured in the teaser, she asked him directly, “So Mr. Heuermann, I understand that you are confessing to me on these murders. Can you please tell me how many of these women did you kill?” To which he responded, “Eight.”
In a bid to distance herself from the man she once knew, Ellerup intentionally refrained from using Heuermann’s first name during their conversation. She expressed that hearing him speak felt familiar, but she wanted to focus on the person he had become, not the one she used to know.
The upcoming documentary installment follows the release of three earlier episodes in June. There’s also another documentary titled “Killing Grounds: The Gilgo Beach Murders” that is set to be released on Amazon’s Prime Video. Both aim to shed light on this tragic and complex case.
Ellerup’s attorney, Robert Macedonio, chose not to disclose any additional details from the new episode but emphasized the emotional toll this ordeal has taken on the families involved. “This has been an extremely emotional and painful process for the family to endure and come to terms with the allegations that Rex Heuermann was the Gilgo Beach serial killer,” he stated. “Ms. Ellerup would like the focus to remain where it belongs — on the victims and their families, who have suffered immeasurable and lasting losses.”
Vess Mitev, a lawyer representing the couple’s two adult children, echoed these sentiments, noting that they wish to move forward positively despite this dark chapter in their lives.
Heuermann’s legal team has not responded to requests for comment regarding these latest developments. Previous episodes of the documentary have shown the family grappling with the stark contrast between their memories of Heuermann, an architect with an office in Manhattan, and the portrait of him painted by law enforcement.
Ellerup, who divorced Heuermann after his arrest in 2023, initially defended his innocence in earlier episodes. However, her daughter has since acknowledged that their father “most likely” committed the brutal murders that have captivated true-crime enthusiasts for years.
Heuermann, 62, recently admitted in court to the murders of seven women and confessed to killing an eighth victim yet to be charged. He stated that he strangled these women, many of whom were sex workers, and dismembered some of their bodies before disposing of them along a desolate parkway near Long Island’s Gilgo Beach, about 50 miles from Manhattan.
Heuermann is scheduled to be sentenced in June, facing life in prison without the possibility of parole.
