SAN ANTONIO – Jury selection is set to begin on Monday in a high-profile murder trial involving Nathan Martinez. He is accused of killing a 17-year-old boy, Julian Junior Robledo, in a drive-by shooting that occurred in August 2023. This tragic incident is linked to a separate shooting that took place in June 2022, which resulted in the deaths of two men and injuries to five others.
Martinez is facing serious charges, including murder for the death of Robledo, who was shot while sitting outside with his mother. In addition to this case, he is also involved in another capital murder case connected to the 2022 shooting that claimed two lives. The investigation into these incidents revealed crucial ballistic evidence that tied them together.
Connecting the Dots: Three Shootings Linked
According to the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD), investigators were able to connect Martinez to multiple shootings using ballistic evidence collected from three different crime scenes.
The first shooting occurred on June 18, 2022, during a family barbecue in the 2500 block of Patron Drive. Witnesses reported a dark SUV driving by and firing an estimated 20 to 30 rounds. Tragically, two men, Alejandro Gomez-Soliz and Juan Gomez, were killed, and five others were injured.
Martinez was later arrested in an unrelated incident involving drugs and possession of a firearm but was released after posting bail.
The second shooting took place in August 2023, as Robledo and his mother were enjoying coffee under their carport. Gunfire erupted, and although Robledo succumbed to his injuries two days later, his mother survived the attack. Additional ballistic evidence was gathered at this scene.
In a third incident at an apartment complex on West Mayfield Drive, a victim reportedly returned fire after being shot at. Although the victim was not cooperative with police, evidence from this shooting also matched the prior incidents, reinforcing the connection between them.
A Pattern of Violence
Martinez, who was 18 when the 2022 shooting occurred, has been charged in nine separate cases over the past two years. These charges include aggravated assault, murder, and various weapons offenses. Notably, court records indicate that he is a known gang member, which adds a layer of complexity to the cases against him.
As jury selection approaches on October 26, the stakes are high. If convicted of murder, Martinez could face a life sentence in prison. However, the trial date for the capital murder case remains unannounced, leaving many unanswered questions about the future of these cases.
