SAN ANTONIO – Texas – A recent burglary at a local training facility has raised concerns about safety and proper training for law enforcement officers. Just two weeks ago, Battle Grounds, a center designed to train military, law enforcement, and security personnel, experienced a theft of nearly a dozen weapons.
Justin Torres, the owner of Battle Grounds, shared details about the incident. He explained, “We want to give them those type of scenarios to come in through here so; when they see it in the real world, [it] is not the first time they’ve seen it. They know how to react.” Unfortunately, 11 training weapons were stolen from the facility, which had just opened its doors earlier this year.
The stolen items included four Unit Solutions rifles and seven Glock 17T training pistols. Although these weapons are designed for training purposes, Torres emphasized their importance for safety during training courses.
Despite the burglary, scheduled SWAT training continued. Officers had to adapt by using their imagination and pretending with “finger guns.” Torres remarked, “So the officers [were] coming through here with their hands [and] we’re simulating.” This kind of adaptability is crucial, but it also highlights the need for proper equipment during training.
Torres pointed out that using Simunition weapons is vital not only for the officers but also for the communities they serve. “Going through a doorway with a rifle and coming through a door with your finger, it’s totally different,” he explained. The distinction between real weapons and pretend scenarios is significant, as it affects how well officers can respond in real-life situations.
It’s disappointing for Torres to see officers currently training with their own equipment due to the theft. “These things are extremely expensive and extremely hard to get a hold of,” he said. To help mitigate the loss, Torres has even paid out of pocket to replace some training items, and Unit Solutions has stepped in to provide a few replacements as well.
Support has also come from officers across the country who have trained at Battle Grounds. Torres expressed gratitude for their offers of assistance, stating, “Any help is appreciated as I continue working to replace everything that was stolen.” His focus remains on ensuring that officers receive the best training possible.
