SAN ANTONIO – Recently, a serious and concerning incident occurred in San Antonio, where an 18-year-old woman named Karla Ibarra was arrested for allegedly giving away her baby to a stranger at a downtown bus stop. The police report reveals that Ibarra handed her baby boy to an unknown woman, stating she no longer wanted him. This event took place around 11:30 p.m. on Broadway near East Pecan Street. When officers arrived, they found the woman with the baby and soon after, Ibarra returned to the area and was taken into custody.
Arthur Villarreal, a valet who witnessed the event, described seeing Ibarra sitting on the curb while officers interacted with her. He speculated that the woman who received the baby might have been homeless, highlighting the complex social issues surrounding this situation.
The police report did not provide specific reasons for Ibarra’s actions. Villarreal, however, shared his thoughts on the challenges faced by young parents today. “That’s the trouble, these youths having babies these days. They don’t know how to take care of them. I guess they get overwhelmed with being a kid (themselves),” he said.
Fabiola Avila, a director at Family Service’s The Neighborhood Place, emphasized that stress and overwhelming circumstances can affect parents of all ages. She noted, “Definitely parents have a lot of stress. It’s very difficult to manage life sometimes.” This statement reflects a broader understanding of the pressures that young parents may experience.

Avila encourages parents to reach out for support, saying, “They could always call 211, and accessing that number, they would be able to access plenty of resources.” This resource can connect individuals to help when they feel overwhelmed.
Additionally, it’s important for parents in crisis to know that there are safe options available. Fire stations across the city serve as designated drop-off points for parents to leave infants safely, rather than abandoning them in public places.
As for Ibarra’s baby, Child Protective Services has stepped in, and the child has been placed in the care of relatives. This incident serves as a reminder of the critical importance of support systems for young parents and the need for community resources to assist those in distress.
