NEW YORK – Bob Mackie, the iconic fashion designer known for his dazzling and bold designs, passed away on Monday at the age of 87. His creative vision helped define glamour during the 1970s, dressing stars like Carol Burnett in whimsical outfits and Cher in strikingly bold attire.

A statement on his social media accounts reflected on his fulfilling life, stating, “He lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a Fashion and Costume Designer, which is all he ever wanted to do.” Mackie died from pneumonia in Palm Springs, California, according to his publicist.

Often referred to as the “Designer to the Stars,” Mackie’s accolades include nine Emmy Awards, a Tony Award, and three Oscar nominations, one of which was for the memorable sheer batwing gown worn by Barbra Streisand in “Funny Lady.” In 2002, he was inducted into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ Hall of Fame, marking his significant impact on the industry.

Mackie’s designs were seen on a variety of famous figures, including Madonna, Sharon Stone, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Notably, he created the iconic sheer, beaded gown worn by Marilyn Monroe when she famously sang “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy.

Influence on Modern Fashion

Bob Mackie’s influence extends far beyond his era. Contemporary stars like Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift draw inspiration from his distinctive style. His designs are still celebrated today, with celebrities like Zendaya wearing Mackie gowns to significant events, such as the 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

Mackie was known for his lavish use of sequins and embellishments, earning nicknames like the Sultan of Sequins and the Guru of Glitter. He famously said, “You don’t try to change anybody, you just try to make them look better than ever,” emphasizing his commitment to enhancing beauty through fashion.

Tributes and Legacy

Following his passing, tributes poured in from fellow designers and celebrities. Actor Kristin Chenoweth praised him as a “legend,” while designer Isaac Mizrahi expressed his sorrow, stating he was “heartbroken.” Actress Alyssa Milano referred to Mackie as “one of the best that ever was,” highlighting the deep respect he garnered in the fashion community.

Mackie’s theatrical contributions were significant as well, dressing the casts of Broadway productions like “On the Town” and “Moon Over Buffalo.” He also created costumes for legendary performers such as Debbie Reynolds and Liza Minnelli, further showcasing his versatility and creativity.

Early Life and Career

Born and raised in Southern California, Mackie was captivated by Hollywood glamour from a young age. He often sketched elaborate costumes for his family and was involved in costume design during high school. After studying advertising and costume design, he began his career working for the renowned costume designer Edith Head before joining “The Carol Burnett Show.”

Close Collaborations with Cher and Carol Burnett

Mackie shared a close bond with both Cher and Carol Burnett, collaborating on some of their most memorable looks. Their partnership produced iconic characters, including Burnett’s hilarious take on Scarlett O’Hara from “Gone With the Wind.” Mackie’s inventive designs, such as the now-famous Starlet O’Hara dress, have been immortalized, with pieces even housed in the Smithsonian.

His work on “The Sonny and Cher Show” further solidified his reputation in the industry, showcasing his ability to blend comedy with high fashion. Mackie’s daring designs for Cher, especially on red carpets, challenged traditional fashion norms and captivated audiences.

Reflections on Fashion

Despite his success, Mackie often expressed mixed feelings about the modern fashion landscape. He observed the rise of the “naked dress” trend and critiqued the lack of originality in contemporary designs. “Nothing is very interesting anymore,” he lamented in a 2017 interview, highlighting a desire for more creativity in the industry.

Mackie also ventured into toy design, creating unique Barbie dolls with diverse looks and storylines. His innovative approach made him a pioneer in fashion for toys, adding to his extensive legacy.

In 2024, a documentary titled “Bob Mackie: Naked Illusion” premiered, celebrating his extraordinary career. His designs continue to fetch high prices at auctions, with one dress selling for $101,600, significantly surpassing its initial estimate, demonstrating the timeless appeal of his work.

Bob Mackie is survived by his son, Robert Gordon Mackie Jr., who sadly passed away in 1992. Mackie’s unwavering commitment to creativity and his ability to inspire future generations of designers ensure that his legacy will endure in the world of fashion.

As he once said, “It’s all about looking good and living your fantasies,” a sentiment that will resonate with fashion enthusiasts for years to come.
