NEW YORK – In a thrilling encounter at the U.S. Open, top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka overcame an initial struggle to defeat Taylor Townsend, securing her place in the quarterfinals. The match showcased Sabalenka’s resilience and skill as she battled through a challenging start.

Despite being broken three times in her first four service games, the two-time defending champion found her rhythm and confidence, ultimately winning the match 6-4, 6-3. Sabalenka’s ability to adapt and refocus was crucial in turning the tide of the match.

“Basically, I was just trying to stay focused on myself and play not only point by point but ball by ball,” Sabalenka reflected after the match. “I’m happy that I was able to turn it around in that second set.”

This match marked the first meeting between Sabalenka and Townsend, who proved to be a formidable opponent in the first set. However, as Sabalenka settled into her game, she showcased her powerful baseline play and strategic net approaches. Looking ahead, Sabalenka is set to face either Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova or Marta Kostyuk in the quarterfinals.

“I’m happy to be through this really tough opponent,” Sabalenka praised Townsend, noting her skills at the net and as a returner. “What a great returner: moving well, very brave. You could see how focused she was. It was really challenging playing her.”

Meanwhile, in the men’s draw, second-seeded Carlos Alcaraz is poised to continue his title defense as he returns to competition following a four-month layoff due to a wrist injury. Alcaraz will face No. 20 Tommy Paul in what promises to be an exciting match at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Alcaraz, riding on a remarkable 17-match Grand Slam winning streak, has shown impressive form at this year’s U.S. Open, dropping only one set through three rounds. His record against U.S. players at majors stands at an impressive 12-0, highlighting his dominance on the court.

American players are making significant strides in this year’s tournament, with Townsend and Paul among the 10 Americans advancing to the round of 16. This marks the highest number of American players reaching this stage at a Grand Slam in nearly 25 years, a feat last achieved at the 2002 U.S. Open.

The five U.S. men remaining—Paul, Ben Shelton, Learner Tien, Frances Tiafoe, and Alex Michelsen—represent the most American men to reach this stage at a major since 1995. Tien, at just 20 years old, has become the youngest American man to reach the fourth round of the U.S. Open since Andy Roddick in 2002.

As the tournament progresses, fans can also look forward to matches featuring other American players, with Shelton, the No. 8 seed, set to compete against Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Emma Navarro facing Anna Kalinskaya. The excitement builds as Jessica Pegula takes on Sorana Cirstea, and Tiafoe squares off against Daniil Medvedev in other fourth-round matchups.
